One other crew, under Sgt Seville, was detailed to another target, Rome, in order to drop nickels and he successfully dropped 39 packets
of 4000 nickels. No opposition was encountered and a dummy oil fire was reported 4.20.3 N 12.30 E. Blackout was poor - light seen
on edge of the city and on street cars. Visibility was good over the Messina and Capo Peloro target area which was clearly identified
and attacked from 5000/7000ft. Bursts were seen and numerous fires observed in the target area. Fires were also observed in Giovanni
and Palmi area. 1x4000lb fell on Pace - burst seen. One aircraft machine gunned lights seen at Bova Mar (toe of Italy) from 2000ft.
two aircraft reported shipping movements - tank landing craft off Paradise close into shore and 3 light naval craft in Narrow Straits.
Opposition negligible. All aircraft returned safely.
