Salerno Marshalling Yards

Mission summary:
"The Salerno Marshalling Yards is tonight's target and nine Wellingtons have been detailed under the captains:
- Sgt Wilkes
- Sgt Stone
- Sgt Felstead
- Sgt Viveash
- Sgt Valentine
- S/Ldr Langlois
- Sgt Hales
- F/O Williams
- F/Lt Jones
All crews located the target area. reports indicate that flares were well placed and ground detail was observed by all crews. One
4000lb bomb fell near the Railway Station, a large fire being started. A second 4000lb bomb was observed to burst at the west end
of the yards in the vicinity of the repair shops. Bursts being seen by other crews. Bursts were also seen straddling the yards and
reports generally indicate that the bombing was well concentrated in the target area. Small fires were started between the Railway
Station and the coast and another in the centre of the town. Opposition over the target area was limited to scattered light flak around
Caso Point, from the Northern outskirts of teh town and East of the town beyond the barracks. Slight and inaccurate. One aircraft
dropped 300000 nickels over Sardinia covering the western area between Cagliari and Bassari. All aircraft returned safely.
